Occupational Therapist
Position Description
CAMH is the largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital as well as one of the world's leading research centres in its field. Our services are delivered to help transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions.
Our goal is to tailor treatment to each individual, providing patient-centered, comprehensive, coordinated care. The Adult Neurodevelopmental Services (formerly Dual Diagnosis Service) provides a wide range of supports to clients diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with mental health problem or behaviours that challenge such as severe aggression or self-injurious behaviour (SIB).
The service is seeking a full-time, permanent Occupational Therapist (OT) position that will report to the manager of Adult Neurodevelopmental Services and work collaboratively with other clinical services within the Adult Neurodevelopmental Services across CAMH, and with community service providers. You will work with other community stakeholders to support clients in the community.
In alignment with the strategic plan of CAMH, the incumbent will be an active participant in continuous quality improvement and clinical evaluation and research activities. Candidates must be capable of providing supervision of Masters level OT Students, collaborating with faculties of Occupational Therapy, contributing to the development of best practices unique to the OT field and also teaching of other professionals. Using a new evidence based intervention, clients are provided with specialized psychiatric and discipline specific assessment along with intensive care using Cognitive Adaptation Training principles. Collaboration with external stakeholders seeking support and shared care for complex clients is a significant part of this role. Some evening hours are required as is work in the community.
You will participate in groups, and clinical team reviews; participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives, program development and supervision of students. Scheduling data entry, clinical documentation and other duties as assigned are parts of the required role.
You will utilize a bio-psychosocial approach and encompass the components of self-care, productivity and leisure in your services and provide client centred care while ensuring security and safety and maintenance of College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) practice standards. Along with clinical team members, the occupational therapist will provide outreach, sensory-based therapy, rehabilitation, support and consultation to help maintain the client in the community, enabling them to live life to the fullest.
You will be expected to provide specialty consultation and support regarding dual diagnoses to other CAMH services. The occupational therapist will work with other community stakeholders to facilitate integration of the client into established community based programs and/or to establish supports for clients in their communities. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position is located at 1025 Queen Street West.
Qualifications
You must be registered and in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO). You must possess a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy (or a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy plus a Master’s degree in OT, Rehab Sciences or a related field), combined with a preferred three (3) years of experience working with individuals who have a serious mental illness.
You must also have membership in either the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapy and/or Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy and be a holder of COTO’s pre-requisite Professional Liability Insurance.
You also must be eligible for adjunct/status-only appointments with university faculties associated with Occupational Therapy that has affiliation agreements with CAMH.
You have strong group facilitation skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to work within the inter-professional teams and to engage with clients, family members, and community care providers. Demonstrated ability to work with clients of diverse backgrounds is necessary. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Please Note: This full-time, permanent position is part of the OPSEU Bargaining Unit.
Salary Range: $34.50 - $45.61 per hour
