Hours: 37.5 Hours Per Week days

Status: Temporary Full-Time 13 months

As an integral member of the Portuguese Mental Health and Addictions Services team, the principal responsibilities of the Mental Health Clinician, include providing comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessments of clients either on site and/or off-site; providing intensive case management on and off site; develop and implement coping strategies in partnership with clients; providing treatment/ therapy for clients, providing therapeutic interventions for clients, families and significant others, either on-site and/or off-site on a short and/or long term basis utilizing a multimodal perspective; providing education and support to family members around issues related to addiction/mental illness; developing and implementing appropriate group programs; making referrals to other community and hospital programs; collaborating with hospital/community groups and agencies in the identification, planning, development and implementation of needed addiction/mental health programs; providing off-site community consultation and education with respect to the identification, assessment and management of substance use/ addiction and/or mental illness; performing departmental responsibilities to contribute to the efficient and effective provision of services; performing teaching responsibilities, participating in relevant research activities, performing duties consistent with the job classification, as required.


  • Fluency in Portuguese required
  • Masters in one of the Social and/or Health Sciences programs, (e.g. Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, etc.) Candidates with a Bachelor degree in a health related field (e.g. Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, etc.) with 8 to 10 years practical and related experience will be considered
  • Registration licensure as required by professional body, e.g. Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, etc.
  • Experience working in an outpatient mental health setting
  • Demonstrated skills in mental health assessments
  • 2 years experience collaborating with clients to create and implement individualized case management support plans (i.e., access to financial aid, medical supports, housing needs, etc)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with mental health and justice service providers to support clients’ goals
  • Experience in provision of residential/housing supports to adults with serious mental illness considered an asset
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
  • Excellent problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of the mental health system and community agencies
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Proven ability to interact with clients in an empathetic manner
  • Ability to perform responsibilities in a courteous and professional manner
  • Additional courses/education on addictions/mental illness related issues are an asset
